The King's Britannia by Simon Dufrais
Britannia racing White Heather at Lulworth off the
Needles, 1926 She was probably the greatest racing yacht ever built and in the service
of two British Kings her record of over 40 years remains unsurpassed. In
635 starts she won 231 firsts. Her name, appropriately was 'Britannia'.
Commissioned by the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, she was launched in
1893 and her revolutionary design and graceful lines led to a new era in
yacht racing. She is seen here in 1926 enjoying new success under the
ownership of the 'Sailor King'- George V.
