Below the vast bulk of the Zoo Bunker one of three giant Flak towers designed to defend Berlin from air attack, some remnants of the citys defenders gather in an attempt to break out of the doomed capital. Panzer v Ausf. D Panthers of SS Panther Division Das Reich make their debut during the initial stages of the German summer offensive for Kursk. This unit with others of the SS Panzer Korps made the deepest advances into the well-prepared Soviet lines. Complete success however, was to elude them when outrunning their supporting divisions at Prokhorovka they were forced to halt for six days.

Fight for Kowel, Poland, March/April 1944 by David Pentland.
Although in the process of regrouping after their escape from the Cherkassy Pocket, Panthers and Panzer Grenadiers of the crack 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking are part of the relief force hastily assembled and thrown in to free the strategically important city of Kowel in the Pripet Marshes. By April 10th the Soviet encirclement of the city was broken and Wiking were pulled out of the line to continue refitting.

Dunkirk by Ivan Berryman.
Between 24th may and 4th June 1940 an extraordinary armada of craft, large and small, naval and civilian, embarked on one of the greatest rescue missions in history. the evacuation of 330,000 British and French troops from the beaches of Dunkirk in northern France. the destroyer HMS Shikari dominates the foreground here as troops pour onto the beaches and harbour moles in search of salvation. MTB are seen picking up troops and taking them to ships further out including MTB102. Also shown is a paddle steamer with very shallow draft taking on troops close to the beach and in the distance HMS Grafton can be seen taking troops from the mole. She was lost later during the evacuation.

HMS Hood Opens Fire Upon the Bismarck by Ivan Berryman.
In the early morning murk of 24th May 1941, the forward 15in guns of HMS Hood fire the first shots against the mighty German battleship Bismarck. Both Bismarck and her escort, the Prinz Eugen, immediately responded, the latter causing a fierce fire on Hoods upper deck, while plunging shot from Bismarck penetrated deep into the British ships hull, causing an explosion that ripped the Hood apart, sinking her in an instant. Tragically, just three survivors were rescued from the water.

Portsmouth August 26th 1940, the lone spitfire of Squadron Leader Sandy Johnstone breaks the ranks and picks off one of the menacing Heinkels only to encounter an equally determined attack from a BF109.
We were brought to readiness in the middle of lunch and scrambled to intercept mixed bag of 100+ Heinkel IIIs and DO 17s approaching Portsmouth from the South. The controller did a first class job and positioned us one thousand feet above the target. with the sun behind us, allowing us to spot the raiders from a long way off. No escorting Messchersmitts were in sight at the time, although a sizable force was to turn up soon after. then something strange happened. I was about to give a ticking off to our chaps for misusing the R/T when I realised I was listening to German voices. It appeared we were both using the same frequency and, although having no knowledge of the language it sounded from the monotonous flow of the conversation that they were unaware of our presence. as soon as we dived towards the leading formation, however we were assailed immediately to loud shouts of Achtung Spitfuern Spitfuern! as our bullets began to take their toll. In spite of having taken jerry by surprise our bag was only six, with others claimed as damaged, before the remainder dived for cloud cover and turned for home. In the meantime the escorting fighters were amongst us when two of our fellows were badly shot up. Hector Maclean stopped a cannon shell on his cockpit, blowing his foot off above the ankle although, in spite of his grave injuries, he managed to fly his spitfire back to Tangmere to land with wheels retracted. Cyril Babbages aircraft was also badly damaged in the action. forcing him to abandon it and take to his parachute. He was ultimately picked up by a rescue launch and put ashore at Bognor, having suffered only minor injuries. I personally accounted for one Heinkel III in the action (Sandy Johnson) .
No. 602 City of Glasgow auxiliary squadron was a household name long before WWII began. It had been the first auxiliary squadron to get into the air in 1925, two of its members, Lord Clydeside and David McIntyre were the first to conquer Mount Everest in 1933: the squadron sweeped the board in gunnery and bombing in 1935, beating the regular squadrons at their own game. It was the first auxiliary Squadron to be equipped with Spitfire Fighters as far back as March 1939 and it was the first squadron to shoot down the first enemy aircraft on British soil. The squadron moved south from Drem airfield in East Lothian on August 14th 1940 to relieve the already battered no. 145 squadron at Westhampnett, Tangmeres satelitte station in Sussex. The squadron suffered 5 casualties during the battle. The squadron remained at Westhampnett until December 1940 to be replaced by no. 610 auxiliary airforce squadron. No 602 squadron itself remained active up until 1957 when it was put into mothballs.

Griffin 2nd Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment on Gold Beach, D-Day, 6th
June 1944. The allied invasion of Normandy 'Operation Overlord' was the greatest
sea-bourne military operation in history. Key to its success and
at the heart of the invasion were the Landings of the British 50th
division on 'Gold' beach and the Canadian 3rd Division on 'Juno'
beach. They provided a vital link between the landings of the
British 3rd Division on 'Sword' beach and the Americans on Omaha and
Utah beaches. They were also crucial in securing the beachhead and
the drive inland to Bayeux and Caen. Each print carries the printed signatures of Lt Col N. Welch
MBE,
Commander M Cree, Wing Commander A.J. Wolton and is individually signed
and numbered by the artist.

Pentland After almost two months Sherman tanks and armoured infantry of the US
2nd Armoured Division eventually broke through the German defences
south-west of St Lo. Pushing aside the shattered remnants of Panzer Lehr
Division, their rapid advance forced a general German retreat. This
would ultimately spell disaster for the German armies in France.

Mustang at Debden following a mission to supply air support over the
Normandy beaches soon after D-Day, June 1944. Having previously flown
Spitfires and Hurricanes with the RAF, Spitfires with 133 Eagle Squadron,
and P-47 Thunderbolts with the Fourth fighter group, Jim Goodson became
one of the USAAF's top fighter pilots of WWII.

There was never a greater
concentration of air power deployed in a n active theatre of war as over
the English Channel in May and June 1944. As D-Day approached, the
USAAF's Ninth Air Force had assembled over 3500 aircraft and, dispatching
up to 1000 aircraft a day, they were pounding enemy positions all the way
from Pas de Calais to the coast of Normandy. 6 June 1944, arguably
the most decisive single day in modern military history, saw the sky
filled with waves of troop carrying aircraft towing gliders, dropping over
20,000 highly trained men in support of the massed sea-borne landings on
the beaches below. Grabbing all the airspace they could find, the
combat wings of the Ninth Air Force were creating havoc among the German
ground forces as they scrambled to get troops and armour to the

(Irish) Field Battery firing on the 'Run-in-shoot' to Queen Beach. They
were the first rounds fired at the Normandy Coast, D-Day 6th June, 1944.
Queen Beach, one of the 4 sectors of Sword Beach, where most of the
landings of D-Day were carried out. The Queen Beach sector which
extended for 1.5km between Lion-sur-Mer and the western edge of
Ouistretham. The attack was thus concentrated on a narrow one-brigade
front. For once the DD tanks and other armour came in exactly on time
and ahead of the infantry. The 8th brigade, with the 1st Battalion of
the South Lancashire Regiment on the right and the 2nd East Yorkshire on
the left.

Normandy on D-Day, by 1st April 1944 there were over 35,500 pioneers in
Normandy. The painting shows the various activities of the pioneers during
