Battle of Roundway Down 1643.

The Royalist Commander General Sir Ralph Hopton took refuge in Wiltshire town of Devizes in July 1643. and was besieged by a parliamentarian army under General Sir William Waller. On hearing of Geneal Hopton's predicament. The younger brother of Prince Rupert, Prince Maurice of Germany, lead a strong force of cavalry. They rode from Oxford to Devizes and attacked the parliamentarian besiegers just outside Devizes at Roundway Down. Prince Maurice drove the parliamentarians off the high ground, at the same time General Sir Ralph Hopton's Infantry attacked from the Town of Devizes. This turned into a victory for the Royalist's. with the Roundheads losing over 1,000 men killed or wounded. With this victory, Prince Rupert pressed on and seized Bristol. (the second largest city in Britain)
